Claude Instant 1 was Anthropic's fast / cheap variant of Claude 1, designed for high-throughput applications where Claude 1's reasoning depth was overkill. The model identifier `claude-instant-1` was deprecated in 2024 as Claude 3 Haiku launched with better performance, lower cost, and the same speed profile. Most apps using Claude Instant migrated to Haiku with a one-line model string change.
