Cohere's original Command model (the generate-text endpoint) was deprecated through 2024 as the Command R and Command R+ family launched. Command R/R+ are designed for retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) workflows specifically, with significantly better long-context handling and citation accuracy than the original Command. The original Command endpoint was wound down on the standard Cohere deprecation timeline (typically 6-12 months notice).

Migration path
Recommended successor
Command R / R+ (Cohere)
Why this is the closest fit
Direct successor model family with the same Cohere API surface. R+ is significantly better on RAG and long-context tasks; R is the smaller / cheaper version.
What differs from the original
Different pricing per token, different prompt-style preferences (especially for RAG with documents). Better citation accuracy than original Command.
What this tool meant
Cohere positioned themselves from launch (2021) as the enterprise-focused alternative to OpenAI — privacy-friendly hosting, embeddings + reranking primitives, enterprise contract structure. The original Command model was their flagship for several years. The Command R+ launch in 2024 represented a strategic refocus on RAG workflows specifically — Cohere's bet that enterprise AI is mostly about retrieval over private documents, not zero-shot reasoning. The bet has been validated by market traction; Cohere is now a meaningful enterprise-AI vendor.

Verification note
Cohere's deprecation timeline for the original Command model needs verification against Cohere's API documentation. The exact sunset date of the original Command endpoint isn't a single publicly-marketed event.
