Refund status
No refund applicable
GitHub Copilot Labs was an experimental VS Code extension that shipped features GitHub was testing for inclusion in the main Copilot product — code explanation, code translation between languages, brushstroke-style code modifications. The extension was deprecated in early 2024 as Copilot Chat (released late 2023) and Copilot Workspace (preview in 2024) absorbed its functionality into the main Copilot product. The Labs extension can no longer be installed; existing installs stopped working at end-of-life.

Migration path
Recommended successor
GitHub Copilot Chat (or Copilot Workspace for project-level work)
Why this is the closest fit
Direct successor in the same Copilot ecosystem. Copilot Chat handles all the explanation/translation/modification features Labs had, integrated into the main IDE experience.
What differs from the original
Copilot Chat is more conversational; Labs was menu-driven. Some Labs-specific features (the original brushstroke metaphor for inline modifications) don't have direct equivalents but the underlying capability is covered.
What this tool meant
Copilot Labs was the testing ground that proved chat + multi-file editing + explain-code were the right product surfaces for AI coding tools. The features tested in Labs became the templates for Copilot Chat, Cursor, Cody, Codeium, and every modern AI coding tool. The deprecation marked the maturation of AI coding — what was experimental in 2022 became table stakes in 2024.
