Microsoft launched Bing Chat in February 2023, embedding GPT-4-based AI directly into the Bing search interface. In November 2023, Microsoft announced the rebrand to "Microsoft Copilot" — separating the AI capability from the Bing search brand. The transition was complete by January 2024. The product itself (GPT-4 + Bing search grounding) continued under the new name with expanded integrations across Windows 11, Edge, Microsoft 365, and standalone apps.

Not applicable. Bing Chat was a free product. The paid tier (Copilot Pro, $20/mo) was introduced after the rebrand, not before.

Microsoft Copilot (same product, automatic)
Why this is the closest fit
Bing Chat and Copilot are the same product. Microsoft moved users without action required.
What differs from the original
Bing Chat was tied to Bing search and Edge browser. Copilot is now available standalone (copilot.microsoft.com), in Windows 11, in Microsoft 365 apps, and via mobile apps. The underlying capability is the same.
What this tool meant
Bing Chat's 9-month run was a strategic gambit by Microsoft to use AI to revive Bing search market share. The initial press impact was substantial (record Bing usage for several weeks in early 2023) but didn't convert into sustained market share gains against Google. The rebrand to Copilot reflects Microsoft's strategic conclusion that AI capability is more valuable as a product surface across their ecosystem than as a feature of one specific app. Bing search itself continues unchanged; only the AI branding moved.
